Two Stick, just off the square in Oxford, is a great place to eat. Denise and I took the kids there for dinner Monday night and it was a lot of fun. If you are in Oxford try it out.

Easy Hunter
An old friend and school mate stopped by to see me the other day. His name is Mike Myrick from the Kudzu Khronicles. Mike is retired now and is enjoying life riding his motorcycle. He wanted me to join him on a trip to New Orleans, but I did not have a football helmet.
Still, instead of the Easy Rider, I could be the Easy Hunter if I could just figure a way to get the hell out of here.
PS if you do not understand this post you missed the 60's

A Shaky Start
This weekend I had to be in Jackson on Sunday to meet the kids. They are staying with me for their Spring Break. I decided to go to camp on Saturday, meet Paul, get in a round of golf and meet the kids at noon on Sunday.
Paul and Dad hunted Saturday morning and did not get a turkey. After lunch I drove in, gathered up Paul and off to the golf course we headed.
Neither of us have picked up a club this year we figured it was going to get ugly. Paul put a bottle of Brandy in the cart and we made a bet that if you hit a Horrible shot you had to take a drink. Not a bad shot, a horrible shot. We really had a good time, hit a lot of good shots, played halfway decently and staggered off the last green in a great mood. We manged to hit a lot of horrible shots too, but for some reason it seemed quite OK.
No turkeys Sunday and now I have the kids for a week of Spring Break. I may need to stop at the liquor store and buy another bottle of Brandy.

Waltzing With A Cane Pole
Marian and Bob have invited Denise and I down to Vicksburg for the annual Riverfest in mid April. It is the only place I know that you can dance, drink and catch catfish at the same time. Click their link and go see how much fun it is. If you are in Missisippi or close by, it is an event well worth your time.
Will also post the link on Max Mississippi soon.

The Lazy Man's Way
Fishing season is officially open as Dad and Ms. Henry caught a whole mess of crappie this weekend. How did they do it? The lazy man's way.
Pulling up to the lake they surveyed the boat and decided that they were just going to fish near the bank and a great idea occurred to my father.
Shifting into low gear he just drove his damn Bad Boy Buggy out into the lake deep enough so they could cast from it. They caught all kind of fish, cranked it up and drove home. That is either brilliant or totally lazy, you decide.
Guy K would love this kind of fishing.

The Thunderhoof Museum
Just a few miles south of Tchula, MS on a county road known as old Highway 49 sits a brick building built in the 1920’s. A faded sign across the entrance reads The Thunderhoof Museum and for one dollar you can go in and look at the strange collection that the old man that runs the place has collected over a lifetime.
The building is rundown and falling apart now and you would not know that it was a great roadside attraction in the 1950's. The giant statues and advertising outside are all gone since the highway changed and all that remains is the old building and the stange old man that runs the place.
Most people think it is all fake, even though everyone in these parts has heard of the gigantic deer known as Thunderhoof. There are few visitors but the old man doesn’t seem to care and if you get him talking about the artifacts there you will be in for a strange and very interesting treat.
Inside the building arranged on shelves are 17 pairs of shed antlers purported to have been collected from the region that belonged to the great buck. The oldest antlers are labeled 1857 and range up to the newest date of 1964. The antlers are gigantic, covered with dust and it would be hard for two people to pick up just one of the magnificent horns.
Around the room are paintings of the deer. Most are on canvas but several are done on treebark supposedly from the early Indians of the area. There are all kinds of carvings, fossilized hoof prints, and parts of trees (logs) where the buck had sharpened his horns. Strings of his shed velvet are covered in glass.
You can take all this in with a smile if you wish, but then you get to other things that make you think.
Hand-written journals from early settlers that saw him, tapes and written stories of hunters that have encountered him, old tales from the Indians that worshipped him, affidavits from locals that had the deer visit their farms, and a few faded photographs of people that actually caught a glimpse long enough to snap a picture. Around the room are many stone and clay sculptures of the deer including the centerpiece of the room that is a full sized replica.
The oddest thing here are some of the antlers that local people found and carved uses for over the years. A very cool set of bagpipes, Several plows, knives , swords, a couple of rocking chairs, hat and gun racks, a baseball bat, lamps, a gunstock on an old musket, and even a horse drawn sleigh from 1897.
If you are in this area, suspend your disbelief and visit this old roadside attraction. You will be glad you did.

Starting A Strange Trip
Jeffrey Hollis is the new appraiser in my office. He is another Oxford millionaire and I have no idea why he is slumming around down in Water Valley. Guess you can't hunt and fish all the time.
He is about to learn all about lying, stealing, cheating, Schemes, dreams, outlaws and crazy people. We are about to start "Trucking"
I can assure you that he is about to embark on a long strange trip working with me.

Hunting With Ms Dorothy
Dad has been very active the last two weeks making turkey blinds and roaming the property on his new Bad Boy Buggy. I asked him what had him in such a frenzy. He said he was going to take Ms Dorothy hunting and wanted his blinds comfortable and just right for her to sit with him.
Last weekend the season opened and they hunted together.
Did they get a turkey?
Hell no! What were you expecting?
He is still raring to go though and maybe this weekend they will.

The Hog Caller
Ron was one of our guests for the Hog hunt. After we had no success on Saturday morning he pulled this contraption out of his bag and turned it on. It was a remote controlled game caller with about a hundred calls on it including everything you would ever want to hear out of a wild hog. It really sounded good.
If you know anything about hog calls, electronic or otherwise write a post about it or at least let my readers know how they work. I am sure Phillip is feverishly working on this subject right now.

Taking It Easy
No Turkeys were taken this weekend by our hard hunters. I spent the weekend laying around in front of the fire drinking hot chocolate and eroding my mind with Television. Hope to get back in the swing of things soon, but I am enjoying these lazy weekends right now.
The story of chief Toby Tubby is about to get started again, please re-read the previous stories.
Fishing will be here soon and if you want to visit for a fishing trip call or email me.

Youth Turkey Hunt Success
Gobblerville, MS> Spencer and I went after a turkey Saturday morning and we did not see, hear, smell or even imagine a turkey the whole time. Of course we were interrupted when a loud BOOM! rolled over us from the Double White Oak Stand.
It just goes to show that if there is any killing to be done, Paul Howell is going to be in the middle of it.
Paul and Michael set up at before day, Paul hit his call and turkeys answered immediately. This big gobbler came strutting in and it was all over when Michael pulled the trigger. The beard on this one was over 10 inches. Congratulations on a magnificent bird!

Happy Birthday For The Editor
Today is my birthday and of course it is wet, raining and miserable outside. Even so, I feel pretty good and Lord willing will be here for awhile yet.
I took the name Editor to show I was the editor of the Bodock Times. This fictional newspaper was in reality our camp newsletter that grew until I learned to put it all on the Web by having a blog. Thank you to the readers out there that have made this a pleasure for me. For my birthday, I'm looking forward to a good steak and a very quiet evening.

The Great Hog Bust Of 2010
Yes, the great hog hunt of 2010 was a total bust. As stated before, the damn hogs have suddenly just disappeared. We did not even see one of the vile creatures this weekend. Did they leave because the rumor was that Phillip was coming to town? Maybe we just had the worst hog hunters in the world out there? I don't know. I can tell you that we had a great time and will go more into detail about our guests and what happened with Michael on my next post. Meanwhile, here is a motley crew......

Get Ready
The weather here has turned really nice and getting into the 60's. Should make for a fun relaxing hunt on Saturday morning.
Burney is headed down this morning to put out more corn for the hogs in hopes it will keep bringing them in to the stand locations.
I am trying to leave early so I can put out some secret, guaranteed, super-duper hog bait that they can't resist. I am going to put some in Marians's pockets.
Spencer and I might try to find a turkey for Youth Weekend too.
Never heard from Matt, if he was coming. Guess he is still under 40 feet of snow.

New Hunting Bill Dead
The geniuses in the Mississippi Legislature have refused the input from the MDWFP on changes in the 2010-2011 hunting seasons. I wonder why?
Maybe you should call Gray Tollison in Oxford and ask him.

Pride Of A Father
This past year, Spencer killed a sack full of deer. What he did not get was a big buck. When he made it to camp, he hunted hard and never complained. He saw lots of bucks and some really nice ones, but he wanted to shoot a deer to mount. I kept my mouth shut and did everything I could to place him at the right spot to get his buck.
I know for a fact that he let a 10-point go, several 8's and I was with him when a nice buck walked right under us and he never lifted his rifle.
The buck wasn't big enough.
Growing up I could not imagine doing what he is doing. (the other boys are doing this too) As a kid, if a deer with horns came by, he was a dead duck.
It is amazing to me the way he thinks about hunting.
The world of hunting has changed and for the better.
Yesterday was Spencer's birthday. I swear I think he is 15.
He will get that buck next year but he is concentrating on getting a big gobbler right now. I am very proud of him.

Ungrateful Hogs
Damn! You try to do something nice for those brillo backed varmints and they just snub the hell out of you. Burney went down to refresh the corn bait we had put out for the Great Hog Hunt and no hogs were seen, no fresh hog sign was found and the hogs have completely disappeared. Now that is just sorry.
Mark went hunting (against my wishes) but he did not see a porker anywhere. They are just gone. Where?, no clue. Hope the Great Hog hunt of 2010 is not a bust.
