A Waiting Friday

Thiis weekend is the week before the Great Hog Hunt. Burney is traveling to camp this weekend to renew the bait for the hunt. The usual suspects are coming to the hunt.
The Henry boys are coming and Chris Dudak, Marian and Bob will be there, and Burney is bringing half of Memphis.
Hope all the kids can make it, plus it will be Youth turkey weekend.
Look for a lot of action next week.
PS- it is not to late for Holly to get in on the hunt.

A Salty Undertaking

Dad and Trent have gone crazy. They are worried about the poor starving deer. Those varmints seem to be doing OK in my book, but those two have decided what we need are mineral/salt blocks to supplement the poor things at this time of year.
They have purchased 10 salt blocks to scatter around the property to do this.
I have a feeling that the hogs will really enjoy them.
Hey Phillip! Will hogs come to salt blocks? Anybody?

True Stories To Come

Right now I am working on the finishing touches of some more true stories that have occured at or near the famous Christmas Place. The first involves the old abandoned military base on our south border. It is remote and mysterious and there is a terrible secret hidden there.

The second is about the old mill. It is falling in and no one is allowed to go inside. It lies against Black Creek down on the Hillside Refuge and most people believe that it is haunted. I do too.

The last story involves the old covered bridge that we fish off of sometimes. It is creaky but the bridge is still solid. What happened there on a warm Halloween night will positively chill your blood.

Fun Guests

This past weekend we had Troy and David come down as guest to shoot a hog. They had no luck but they saw about a million deer (eating our bait). They saw several really nice bucks wandering around and Troy told us stories about the old days when he and Paul hunted turkeys togther. We built a good fire, the weather was nice and it was pretty nice to just enjoy being there. Hope they will come back soon.

Bad Boy Howell

Imagine my surprise when I arrived at camp and found Dad standing beside his new Bad Boy Buggy. According to him, he is poor and about to starve to death. I think I will not worry about him for awhile.
He zipped around, took everyone but me for a ride and in general acted like a kid with a new toy. I will admit that is one sharp vehicle. It even has a winch.
Look out turkeys, Dad may have rejuvenated his hunting desire for awhile.

A Hog Surprise!

Denise, Camo and I are headed to the famous Christmas Place today. The weather has turned warmer and it looks like Burney and I will be able to start our plan of baiting all the fields in the bottom for the wild hogs. We know exactly what to do!
We are going to feed them, let them know we care about them, worried about their feelings. We are worried about their health and want to make sure they have enough to eat because they are so warm and cuddley. Then when they get used to coming to the bait, we are going to blast the hell out of them.
Phillip would be proud!
Should get interesting.

Check this guy out. His name is Txhunter and he lives in Lufkin, Texas. An avid outdoorsman, he hunts Texas Public Lands. Hence the name of his blog, Hunting Texas Public Lands. He is also in law enforcement and part of a K-9 search and resue team. He hunts, he goes fishing, and he loves to do it all with his kids.
Please go over, say hello, encourage him to join the OBS and make him feel a part of the outdoor blogging community.

Another Blogoversary

Yes, another milestone in my blogging trek. Way back in November of 2006 I made my first post to introduce you to the famous Christmas Place, the colorful members there and that no-good rotten giant buck that is continually tormenting me.
Since then a lot of big deer have been taken, my lawyer brothers are still evil and the Legend of Thunderhoof has spread.
I hope to be here for a while yet as there are a lot more ghost stories, interesting adventures and plain craziness to come that I am sure you will enjoy.

Hearts-R-Us

Friday night the Mail Rider and I took the ladies for our annual night out at the Como steak House for Valentines Day. You know how romantic we are.
Drew Stewart came and livened up everything with his stories of being a freshman and frat rat at Ole Miss. We had a great tme and a great meal and caught up on a whole lot since football season. Next year, y'all make arrangements to meet us.

The Winter Blahs

Deer season is over and football too. What the hell do you do for the rest of the winter? I don't know about you but I am tired. Tired of work, tired of dreary weather and tired of freezing. I'm not going to do any thing but sit here and bang on this drum all day.

Avahoof

I have finally figured out and put a picture up for my Entrecard blog avatar. I am not sure how it will play out, might still need a little tweaking. If you use entrecard, leave a comment and I will try to purchase an add on your site just to see what it looks like or any difference it will make to clicks here.
Yes, it is Avahoof. That stupid deer wanted to be in the picture.

A Link to Texas History

A common theme that I have noticed in Southerners is their link to the land. Maybe this is the true distinction that seperates us from the Yankees in the northern states. I have recently added a link to a blog called The K-Bar Chronicles which is run by a man named Steve Killam.
His ranch is in Angelina Co. Texas and is supplied with water from Hottel Creek (or Hangmans Creek if the rumors are true) and over the years has dwindled in size to just a small farm with cattle etc. Scott wants to preserve the history of the farm and the family members who created it. The K- Bar Ranch.
Right now he is delving into the day to day operation of the ranch with a few glances backward into his past growing up there.
He will be adding old pics, stories and histories of the ranch and area as time goes by. Lucky for us he will do some cow-blogging like Marian too!
Right now he is starting to get a wild hog problem and I might have to gather up Phillip and head that way to help eradicate the problem.
No, I have no idea if it is near Goldthwaite where Jon hangs out and no, I don't think he knows the beautiful Becky either, but I am sure they all live near each other. Texas can't be that big can it?

Make 'Em Fat

Dad has gone out and bought a feeder. We are buying this to help make sure that the deer and turkeys have more than enough to eat during this time of the year. In fact, we want the turkeys so fat, they can't fly. When the deer start growing new antlers we want them so big that they can't lift their heads off the ground. The hogs? we want them so fat they will just lay there and wallow while we blast them. Getting this feeder should be a good start.

A Spontaneous Holiday

Across the South, today is a spontaneous National Holiday.
Drew Brees was being carried off the field at the Super Bowl and a reporter ran up and asked him "Drew, you've just won the Super Bowl and been named Most Valuable Player, what are you going to do next?" He replied "I'm going to the famous Christmas Place Hunting Club!"
WHO DAT!

The Lawyer's Birthday

Today is Paul Howell's birthday. He is officially old as dirt. I am sure he is celebrating by foreclosing on some old widow or an orphanage. Send him best wishes and remind him that work camps start in March.

National Skip Me Day

Today is National Signing Day and once again, here I am sitting by the phone wearing nothing but a football helmet and a jock strap waiting for the coaches to call me. I know that I am the greatest quarterback of all time, why doesn't my phone ring?
Oh well, maybe next year.

Damn Phil !!!!

That stupid groundhog needs to get his priorities straight. I don't think we can take another six weeks of winter. The Mailman says a hog is a hog period. Phil would be well served not to show his face at the famous Christmas Place.
Meanwhile on Rattlers' Knob, Dad blew his grunt call and rattled this morning, and all the big bucks peeped out, looked around and did not spot any orange hunting vests. They quickly scampered out of their holes and ran amok all over the property.
